On June 10th in Istanbul, the Champions League Final will take place between Manchester City and Inter Milan. Man City tied Real Madrid 1-1 in the first leg of the semi-finals, but it was surprising how dominant Man City was in the second leg, especially with what was at stake. Madrid has such a high caliber of players, and their goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois played an outstanding game. But City made them look like a disorganized team, especially in the first half, eventually beating them 4-0 for an aggregate of 5-1 to move onto the finals.
Manchester City takes on Inter Milan
City is the current Premier League champion, and their next two games are very significant. On June 3rd, they are playing against Manchester United in the FA Cup final. If they can win that game and the June 10th Champion League Final, they’ll be only the second English team in history to win all three in the same year.
1999 was the last year the English were able to accomplish it. Manchester United had won the Premiere League Championship and the FA Cup. They took on the superior Bayern Munich team but were able to beat them in the end for the treble.
Manchester City is hoping to repeat that process after almost 25 years.
Inter Milan took on their local rivals AC Milan in the semi-finals. Inter went ahead by two goals after only 11 minutes. Eden Dzeko opened the scoring and kept AC from scoring for the remainder of the game. They won the first match 2-0. In the second leg, they won 1-0 for an aggregate of 3-0.
The biggest consideration for Inter coach Simone Inzaghi was whether to start Dzeko or Romelu Lukaku alongside Lautaro Martinez in attack. Lukaku has years of experience but is not as athletic and mobile as he once was. Dzeko is the second oldest player to score in a Champions League semi-final at 37 years.
Inzaghi will now have to decide whether to start Dzeko again or let Lukaku start in the final. The last time Inter made it to the Champions League Final was in 2010 when they won for the third time and also completed the treble. Inter has won the Champions League three times. City has never won it, but they are the favorites to win this time around.
Champions League Final Odds
Man City -255
Draw +390
Inter Milan +600
Manchester City are the clear favorites to win, but they still have one more game before the finals. When City takes on United on June 3rd for the FA Cup, it will be the first Manchester derby in a cup final. The outcome of that game might change the odds on the Champions League final depending on how well City handles United.
How Will the Champions League Final Play Out?
Most agree that this is City’s game to lose. They have the better team but Inter may have the better strategy. They will want to keep a clean sheet as long as possible which will grow Inter’s confidence.
City is expected to have possession of the ball for most of the game. The longer it is in Inter’s half, the more chances City will have to score. Inter will need to slow the game down and use stretch passes to spread out City and force them to make mistakes.
Both teams have played through tough opponents to get here so any outlook is possible. The odds are in City’s favor but Inter isn’t expected to fall easily. They have to show up with a great strategy to outmaneuver Manchester City which is more talented, more athletic, and fresher than Inter Milan.
