March Madness 2024 Top SEC and Big 12 Teams. Men’s college basketball is quickly coming to a close for 2024. With only a few games left for each team, we thought we’d look at the Big 12 and SEC and where they fit in the top seeds. Nine teams from the Big 12 and seven from the SEC are expected to be part of the NCAA tournament, all within the top 10 seeds.
The Big 12 Candidates

- Houston Cougars – No. 1 seed (+900)
- Kansas Jayhawks – No. 2 seed (+2200)
- Iowa State Cyclones – No. 3 seed (+2200)
- Baylor Bears – No. 4 seed
- BYU Cougars – No. 5 seed
- Texas Tech Red Raiders – No. 6 seed
- TCU Horned Frogs – No. 8 seed
- Oklahoma Sooners – No. 9 seed
- Texas Longhorns – No. 10 seed
The SEC Candidates
Team (Odds to Win March Madness)
- Tennessee Volunteers – No. 2 seed (+1400)
- Alabama Crimson Tide – No. 3 seed (+1600)
- Auburn Tigers – No. 4 seed (+2000)
- Kentucky Wildcats – No. 5 seed
- South Carolina Gamecocks – No. 6 seed
- Florida Gators – No. 7 seed
- Mississippi State Bulldogs – No. 9 seed
Houston Cougars (+900)
The Cougars may be the best team in the nation, but it won’t be because of their offense. They’ve shot just 48.3% from inside the arc, and their effective field goal percentage is 49.5%. They are adding 38.7% of offensive rebounds and have only turned the ball over 13.5% of the time. But it’s their defense that’s kept them at the top, holding teams to 29.6% from three and 42. 8% from inside the arc this season. They have the best defensive rating in the country at 87.7.
Houston struggled in January with consecutive losses against Iowa State and TCU but has now won five in a row, including two victories last week against top-15 teams – Iowa State and Baylor. Their next three games are against unranked opponents before they end the season against the Kansas Jayhawks.
Tennessee Volunteers (+1400)
This is the 55th week in a row that Tennessee has been in the AP top 25. That’s the third-longest streak in the country behind Houston (81) and Kansas (60). It’s also their 11th week in a row in the AP top 10.
They only have three losses in their last 20 games, a far cry from their 4-3 start.
The Volunteers are on a four-game winning streak, but they have a rough set of games to finish off the season against Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina, and Kentucky. If they do well against these teams, they may become a No. 1 seed team, which has never happened in their history.
If your players are looking for what to bet on before March Madness starts, suggest Tennessee’s last four games.
Kansas Jayhawks (+2200)
The Jayhawks have not been able to put together more than two wins in a row all season, which is life in the Big 12, but one thing they have done well is winning at home until last Tuesday. Unranked BYU ended Kanas’ 19-game home winning streak. Kansas was ahead 12 points in the second half, but BYU took charge after that and rallied for a comeback.
Kansas takes on Baylor next, and then Kansas State before finishing the season against the top Big 12 team, Houston.
Alabama Crimson Tide (+1600)
The Tide have a relatively easy schedule to finish the season except for Tennessee, who they meet on Saturday. They lost to the Volunteers 91-71 on January 20. If they can win the rematch, they can take over the top spot and win the SEC.
They’ll have to improve their defensive performance after the loss against Kentucky on Saturday (117-95), which saw a lack of defense on both teams.
