The top conference in NCAA Football got bigger and better this year by adding Texas and Oklahoma from the Big 12. The Big 10 conference added four teams from the Pac-12, which edged them a little closer to the SEC but hasn’t caught up to them yet. Take a look to our SEC college football predictions for 2024.
The Georgia Bulldogs Remain at the Top
2023 record: 13-1
2024 prediction: 10-2
Georgia’s defense is expected to remain one of the best in college football, and they’ve done an excellent job of fortifying the offense. To top all that, they have quarterback Carson Beck returning after a stellar debut. 2023 started a little shaky for him, but he ended the season with almost 4,000 passing yards and 24 TDs. With Beck as the top Heisman contender, the Bulldogs aren’t just expected to win the SEC but the national championship as well, trying for their third in four years.
Texas Longhorns
2023 record: 12-2
2024 prediction: 10-2
Moving to the top conference wasn’t a big step for the Longhorns. They are ranked No. 2. They made their first College Football Playoff appearance last year and are working towards doing even better this year. With the new 12-team format in the playoffs, instead of the previous 4-team format, they should have no problem getting in again, especially with quarterback Quinn Ewers returning for his third season.
Alabama Crimson Tide
2023 record: 12-2
2024 prediction: 9-3
Head coach Nick Saban has retired and been replaced by Kalen DeBoer, who produced one of the top offenses in Washington. The team lost six defensive players to the NFL Draft and has a new defensive coordinator, Kane Wormmack. Expect them to compete, but they may need time to settle in with all the newcomers.
Oklahoma Sooners
2023 record: 10-3
2024 prediction: 8-4
This team has potential with a new star as quarterback, Jackson Arnold, and a defense that allowed only 5.4 yards per snap last year. They have a rough schedule for their first year in the SEC. The core of the defense will be returning, but all five offensive line starters have moved on, leaving a big question mark on how well they will protect their QB.
Tennessee Volunteers
2023 record: 9-4
2024 prediction: 9-3
The Vols expect great things from quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who spent last year on the bench behind Joe Milton. The offense has proven talent, but the defense remains to be tested, although they have top EDGE James Pearce Jr. They’re a young team that might need more time to develop, but who knows?
Missouri Tigers
2023 record: 11-2
2024 prediction: 9-3
They were expected to finish in the bottom half of the SEC last year and won 10 games for the first time in nine years. Predictions are that they won’t do as well this season. Still, with quarterback Brady Cook and wide receiver Luther Burden III returning, along with other proven players, they might surprise again. Keep your limits in if you see lots of interest in this team.
LSU Tigers
2023 record: 10-3
2024 prediction: 8-4
The Tigers hope they have a suitable replacement for quarterback Jayden Daniels with sophomore Garrett Nussmeier. The offense also lost Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas in the first round of the NFL Draft. Their defense was their biggest issue last season, and so far, it doesn’t look like they’ve made many improvements. They might have difficulty getting eight wins unless Nussmeier can break out.
Texas A&M Aggies
2023 record: 7-6
2024 prediction: 8-4
The Aggies have a new coach, Mike Elko, who took over for Jimbo Fisher mid-season in 2023. But quarterback Conner Weigman injured his foot partway through the year before he could realize his full potential. Weigman could do well under new offensive coordinator Collin Klein. There are some exciting combinations to watch develop.
Ole Miss Rebels
2023 record: 11-2
2024 prediction: 8-4
This could be the underrated team of the year. Plus, they have a favorable schedule without clashes with Texas, Alabama, or Tennessee. The Rebels had a successful campaign last season and have done a lot to improve through the transfer portal, including three of the top 25 players from rival SEC teams. Jaxson Dart is one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. So, why only eight wins?
Auburn Tigers
2023 record: 6-7
2024 prediction: 7-5
For his second year with Auburn, head coach Hugh Freeze improved the talent of the offense with new receivers. New defensive coordinator DJ Durkin has five returning starters while bringing in new talent. The question is whether quarterback Payton Thorne can perform better than he did last year.
Florida Gators
2023 record: 5-7
2024 prediction: 6-6
Their offense should continue to shine with quarterback Graham Mertz, who threw for 2,903 yards, had 20 touchdowns, and only three interceptions in 11 starts. They improved their defense, which struggled last season, but have one of the most challenging schedules in the SEC.
South Carolina Gamecocks
2023 record: 5-7
2024 prediction: 6-6
This team had a difficult 2023 because of inexperienced players and injuries, but they showed signs of improvement in November. The receiver corps is light, so redshirt freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers may be unable to showcase his talent.
Kentucky Wildcats
2023 record: 7-6
2024 prediction: 6-6
The defense may continue to be the team’s weak point (allowing 29.1 points per game in conference play), as nine starters are returning. But they’ve brought in quarterback Brock Vandagriff from Georgia, who is short on experience but long on talent. This could be an exciting offense to watch and gamble on.
Arkansas Razorbacks
2023 record: 4-8
2024 prediction: 5-6
The offense generated only 3.5 yards per carry last year and allowed 47 sacks. They brought back former head coach Boby Petrino in hopes of turning this team around.
Mississippi State Bulldogs
2023 record: 5-7
2024 prediction: 5-7
The Bulldogs produced the least on offense and defense in the SEC. It has a new head coach and only two returning starters. It’s a huge risk to bet on, but it will be interesting to see how it develops over the season.
Vanderbilt Commodores
2023 record: 2-10
2024 prediction: 4-8
With two 0-8 seasons in conference play, fourth-year coach Clark Lea is on the hot seat to get this team out of the basement. He’s gambling on many changes, starting with dual-threat transfer quarterback Nate Johnson.
